London based photographer Barney McCann, who has been living and working in the South East for a number of years now, has just been announced as the winner of DONT WALK’s prestigious Analogue Photography Award. The award which aims to celebrate film photography in all it’s glory – recognising St Andrew’s heritage as an epicentre of early photography whilst also honouring Lomography’s history as a pioneer of all things analogue – was designed to give young creatives a platform to express themselves through photography as a serious art form. With just over 650 entries in total, and a final shortlist selected by Lomography and freelance analogue photographer Alena Jascanka, Barney’s success undoubtedly marks him out as one to watch closely over the coming years, displaying a remarkable talent for his composition and framing of subject. We caught up with him, fresh from his success, to find out more about his experience with DONT WALK, where he goes for inspiration, and what his plans are for the future.

    1) How does it feel to have won this year’s UK Analogue Photography Award? How did you hear about the award? Was there any particular reason you chose the shots that you did? Fantastic. It’s lovely to know people quite like something I really like doing. I don’t remember how I found out about the competition, but I’m glad I did. This is the first competition I’ve ever entered! I had a rough idea of what photos were popular from my blog, (www.cargocollective.com/barneymccann) and I asked for the opinion of my family and friends as well.

    2) A lot of your submissions were taken during the London riots, to what extent does contemporary culture impact your work?

A lot, I like to keep my eyes and ears open and take photos of things going on around me.

    3) Where do you look for new inspiration?

Galleries, Blogs, My Friends – my friends more than anything, I have a lot of talented people around me and I have to keep up.

    4) What advice would you give to new photographers?

Keep going, put your pictures in a public forum and get as much feedback as you can, look at other peoples work as often as possible and keep trying new things, never say no to anything and you won’t miss an opportunity.

    5) What’s now? What’s next? Keep an eye out for CREAM Music, Life After Death – a short film, work with Garudio Studiage and, of course, more Barney McCann photography! – Lots of hard work with some very talented people coming up. Keep track of what I’m up to on @barneymccann.
